Observation Narrative
Habitat supports one of the finest "circumneutral seepage swamps" in Virginia, covering about 25 acres in a springy, braided, stream head basin. In addition to its exceptionally lush and diverse flora, the community contains an outstanding population of the globally rare grass Poa paludigena and an abundance of the uncommon northern tree Fraxinus nigra in all woody layers. Trees measured in plot (dbh in cm.): Liriodendron tulipifera (47), Acer rubrum (47), Fraxinus americana (33). Mean groundwater pH (4 samples) = 6.54. Mean groundwater temperature (deg. C, 4 samples) = 9.42.
Plot located at headwaters of Wildcat Hollow on northern side of seepage swamp, ca. 0.6 mi ENE of parking area #4 on Rt. 638.
